What’s the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?

Contact Us

If you’re in the market for senior care, it’s easy to use the terms assisted living and nursing home interchangeably, but, the truth is, they are very different products. Here’s what you need to know about senior living communities and nursing homes before you move your loved one.

  • Medical care

Assisted living communities have nurses and staff on-site 24 hours a day, but that’s generally for peace of mind. Assisted Living residents may need some help with things like medication management, bathing, or dressing, throughout the day, but don’t need constant supervision.  Nursing homes, on the other hand, cater to adults with serious medical needs and need one-on-one care for most, if not all of the day.

  • Environment

Because of the level of care nursing home residents need, their environment tends to be very medically oriented and sterile. Assisted living communities focus on being homelike, and offer things like meals, activities, and outings to increase socialization and overall well-being. Senior living residents also have the option to have their own private apartment for added privacy and independence.

  • Price

Assisted living communities cost less than nursing homes, largely because of the differing levels of in-depth medical care. (In fact, the average price for a nursing home apartment is twice as much as assisted living.) So, if you’re seeing some prices that are significantly higher than other options in the same neighborhoods throughout your search, be sure to double-check whether or not they’re licensed for senior living or skilled nursing.

    The Hearth

On Saturday, October 10th, Jill and Scott were married at The Hearth at Glastonbury in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Scott and Jill requested to have the wedding at The Hearth because they wanted Scott’s mother, Maria, a Hearth resident, to be a part of their special day. For safety precautions due to COVID-19, Maria was unable to travel to their original wedding location, so the couple came to her! It was a wonderful ceremony and a picturesque day. They were married in the gazebo on our grounds. Champagne colored hydrangeas surrounded the gazebo with tall autumn leaves in the background. Jill’s bouquet was arranged with red, white, peach and champagne flowers and sage colored leaves. The ceremony was very unique as everyone was wearing masks. In keeping with COVID-19 precautions, all guests were properly social distant at 6 ft. apart. Despite the unusual circumstances it was a beautiful ceremony. ... See MoreSee Less
